There are coaches who inherit systems. Then there are coaches who are the system. Casey Alexander is the latter. After building one of college basketball’s most analytically sophisticated programs at Belmont, he has taken his blueprint to Manhattan, Kansas. Kansas State is getting one of the most underrated coaching minds in the country, and the data behind what he built makes that case better than any reputation ever could.
Alexander is one of only four coaches nationally to win 20 or more games in 10 consecutive seasons. The other three are Mark Few at Gonzaga, Kelvin Sampson at Houston, and Bill Self at Kansas. That is not a mid-major footnote. That is a credential that belongs on any short list of the best coaches in college basketball, regardless of conference.
Look at Where His Players Went
Before getting into what Alexander is building at Kansas State, look at what he left behind and where it landed.
Tyler Lundblade transferred to Tennessee. Drew Scharnowski landed at Duke. Sam Orme headed to Nebraska. These are Belmont-developed players being recruited by high-major Division I programs in the most competitive transfer market the sport has ever seen. Alexander’s programs do not just win games. They develop players who perform at the highest levels of college basketball, and the portal confirmed it.
What the Data Says About His System
ShotTracker Scout rated Belmont’s offense No. 1 in the country in Shot IQ during the 2025-26 season. To understand why that matters, it helps to know what Shot IQ actually measures.
Shot IQ is a proprietary metric, rated 0 to 10, that evaluates the quality of every shot decision independent of whether the shot goes in. It accounts for shot location, shot type, defensive pressure, and game context. The best individual shot selectors in Division I men’s basketball tend to score in the 7.5 to 7.7 range. A team averaging a 7.2 Shot IQ across 1,874 possessions is not just above average. It is operating at an elite level across an entire season of possessions. That is what Belmont did.
For context on the 1.21 points per shot the system produced: the Division I men’s average hovers around 1.0 to 1.05 points per shot. Belmont’s offense ran 15 to 20% above that baseline on a consistent basis. More than one in three of their shots, 34.1%, scored an 8.0 or higher on the Shot IQ scale, converting at 1.4 points per shot. Most programs struggle to get 20% of their attempts into that elite tier. Belmont operated there as their baseline.
The best individual shot selectors in Division I tend to score in the 7.5 to 7.7 range. Belmont’s team average was 7.2 across nearly 1,900 possessions. That is what elite offensive execution looks like at scale.
The engine behind those numbers is ball movement. Catch-and-shoot attempts carried a 7.3 Shot IQ average, a full 0.8 points higher than off-the-dribble attempts. Nearly 58% of all shots were catch-and-shoot, ranking 14th highest in Division I men’s basketball. An additional 23.8% were completely unguarded, ranking 23rd nationally, converting at 1.52 points per shot on those attempts alone.
The shot diet reflects the same discipline. Roughly 86% of all attempts came from the two highest-value zones on the floor, either at the rim or from three-point range. Paint touches triggered 60.5% of all shot possessions, setting up the looks the system was designed to create. Against set defenses in structured half-court settings, Belmont’s offense was not just good. It was the best in America.
Defensively, the 2025-26 Belmont squad nearly abandoned zone entirely, implementing full-court man-to-man pressure at five times the rate of the previous season. That mentality travels with him to Manhattan.
The Roster Built to Run It
Twelve new players have arrived in Manhattan, each one mapped directly onto Alexander’s system. The pieces fit in a way that suggests this roster was constructed with real intentionality rather than assembled from available portal talent.
Brandon Rechsteiner, Colorado State
Rechsteiner is the crown jewel of the class and the player who makes the motion offense function at its highest level. His 87 threes at 38.8% give Alexander a true spacing anchor, but the range of his game goes well beyond catch-and-shoot. He converts at 50.0% off the dribble, 51.5% on step-backs, and 56.5% on two-point attempts. A high-volume shooter with that kind of shot versatility is the exact player Alexander’s system is built to maximize.
Montana Wheeler, Bradley
Wheeler is the trigger man. As a freshman, he posted a 2.80 assist-to-turnover ratio, a number that reflects both decision-making maturity and an understanding of how to run an offense without turning it over. In Alexander’s motion system, the point guard is the engine. Wheeler was built for this role.
Jaden Schutt, Virginia Tech
Schutt is the floor spacer the system needs. An extraordinary 82.7% of his attempts were threes last season, and he connected at 39.0% from deep in the ACC. His 2.14 assist-to-turnover ratio and 87.5% free throw rate describe a player who maximizes every open look the motion offense creates and does not hurt the team when the ball finds him in pressure situations.
Dezdrick Lindsay, Oregon
Lindsay is the connective tissue. A 6’6″ forward with a 57.4% assist rate means more than half his possessions ended with him creating for a teammate rather than scoring himself. Add 28 steals and 100 rebounds and Lindsay is the Sam Orme archetype in this system: versatile, unselfish, and essential to ball flow.
Pape N’Diaye, Xavier
N’Diaye is the defensive anchor who makes full-court pressure sustainable. At 7’0″ and only 9.2 minutes per game last season, he blocked 29 shots, projecting to 4.2 blocks per 40 minutes at full deployment. His 7.2 Shot IQ, the highest in the incoming class, means he only takes shots the offense earns. When pressure breaks down, he protects the rim.
The Triangle That Could Define the Season
The closing argument for how dangerous Kansas State can be in the Big 12 comes down to three names: Rechsteiner, Schutt, and center JT Rock.
Rock is a 7’1″ center who shot 40.7% from three on 59 attempts in 2025-26. That is unicorn production from a big man, and the rest of his game holds up just as well. He finishes at the rim at 100% on dunks and 63.4% on layups. His 54.3% catch-and-shoot percentage from the five position is virtually unheard of at any level. Crucially, Rock can both roll and pop at elite efficiency, giving the ball-screen game the exact versatility that made Belmont’s system so lethal in recent seasons.
Put Rechsteiner and Schutt on the wings alongside Rock at the five and Big 12 defenses face a decision on every single possession. Help the paint and give up corner threes. Stay home on the shooters and give Rock clean looks at the rim. There is no good answer, which is exactly the point.
